Tankless Water Heater Repair

CF Plumbing diagnoses and repairs tankless and on-demand water heaters throughout La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, as well as select areas of San Diego and Orange Counties.

Tankless equipment is efficient when it is sized, vented, supplied and maintained correctly. When it is not, the symptoms are easy to misread: an error code on the display, lukewarm water at one fixture, a unit that fires then shuts down, or a house that never gets enough hot water at the same time. Those problems are often blamed on the heater itself when the cause is scale, an undersized gas line, a restricted inlet screen, a recirculation setting, water pressure, or an installation that never matched the home.

Our technicians work on advanced tankless systems every week, including Navien and other major brands. We identify the actual cause, explain the options in plain language, and complete the repair so the system runs the way it was designed to.

Common tankless problems we diagnose

  • Error codes and lockouts on the control panel

  • No hot water, or hot water that does not last

  • Temperature swings while a shower is running

  • Ignition failure, delayed ignition or the unit will not fire

  • Short cycling — the burner starts and stops repeatedly

  • Weak hot-water flow while cold-water pressure is normal

  • Unusual noise from the unit or the circulation pump

  • Condensate drain problems or venting issues

  • Recirculation that no longer delivers timely hot water

  • A recent installation that has never performed correctly

What a professional tankless repair actually involves

A tankless water heater is a compact appliance connected to gas, water, venting, electrical controls and, in many North County homes, a recirculation loop. A useful diagnosis looks at the whole system, not just the code on the screen.

A typical service visit includes reading stored diagnostic history, inspecting inlet screens and isolation valves, checking gas supply and combustion performance, evaluating scale in the heat exchanger, confirming venting and condensate drainage, and verifying that the unit is sized for the fixtures used at the same time. When a recirculation pump or timer is part of the system, we check that configuration as well. A repair that clears a code without finding why the code appeared usually brings the same call back a few weeks later.

Why tankless units struggle in North County San Diego

Mineral content in local water is hard on heat exchangers. Scale narrows the passages inside the unit, reduces flow, drives error codes and shortens equipment life. Coastal and canyon homes in Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Del Mar and La Jolla also have long pipe runs. If recirculation is set incorrectly, the unit can short-cycle or the far bathrooms wait even longer for hot water.

Larger homes in Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch add another layer: simultaneous demand. If two showers, a sink and a laundry load start at once and the original unit was undersized, no repair to the circuit board will make the heater produce more water than its rating allows. In those cases we explain whether a repair, a descaling, a gas-line correction or a properly sized replacement is the honest next step.

Brands and systems we service

CF Plumbing regularly diagnoses and repairs Navien tankless water heaters and other major tankless brands used in North County homes. Navien systems in particular combine electronic controls, sensors, heat exchangers and recirculation settings. A problem that looks like the heater is broken may originate in the plumbing layout, the gas supply, incoming water pressure or a recirculation configuration that was never commissioned correctly.

If you can, text us a photo of the front of the unit, the model and serial label, and the error code on the display before we arrive. That lets us pull the right history instead of guessing in the driveway.

Repair vs. replacement

We do not default to a new heater. If the heat exchanger is intact, the venting is correct and the unit is an appropriate size for the home, a targeted repair plus descaling is often the right work. Replacement becomes the better conversation when the heat exchanger is failing, parts are no longer available, the original install was never safe or correctly sized, or the home’s hot-water demand has changed.

When replacement is the better path, see our Tankless Water Heater Installation page. If the unit is running but overdue for service, see Water Heater Maintenance & Descaling. Weak hot-water flow with normal cold-water pressure is also covered in our guide on how to troubleshoot low water pressure.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my tankless water heater show an error code then work again?

Intermittent codes are often scale, a dirty inlet filter, unstable gas pressure, a failing sensor or a venting restriction. The code is a symptom. Clearing it without finding the cause usually means it returns.

The unit is new. Why is the water still lukewarm?

New does not mean correctly installed. Undersized gas pipe, wrong venting, isolation valves left partly closed, an inlet screen packed with debris from the original start-up, or a unit that cannot keep up with simultaneous fixtures will all produce poor performance on a new heater.

Can you repair a tankless water heater that another company installed?

Yes. A large share of the tankless calls we see are units that were never commissioned correctly. We evaluate the installation as well as the appliance.

Do I need a plumber who works on my specific brand?

You need a plumber who understands tankless systems as a category — combustion, flow, sensors, recirculation and the plumbing around the unit — and who has real field time on brands like Navien. Brand familiarity matters. Guessing from a generic parts list does not.
