Tank Water Heater Installation
CF Plumbing installs and replaces traditional tank water heaters for homes in La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, and in select areas of San Diego and Orange Counties.
A tank replacement looks simple from the driveway. The difference between a lasting installation and a short-lived one is sizing, connections, expansion control, venting, seismic strapping, drainage and the water pressure the new tank will live with. We handle the job from safe removal and disposal through final testing so the house has dependable hot water and the installation meets the manufacturer and the code.
When a tank is still the right water heater
-
The home’s simultaneous demand is modest and a correctly sized tank covers it
-
The existing location, venting and gas supply are already right for a tank
-
The homeowner prefers a simpler appliance and a lower equipment cost
-
A tankless conversion would require gas, vent or electrical work that does not make sense for this house
We install tanks when they are the honest answer. We also say when a tankless unit, or a tank plus recirculation, will serve a large Rancho Santa Fe or multi-bath Encinitas home better. That conversation belongs at the estimate, not after a 40-gallon tank is already in a five-bath house.
What our tank installation includes
-
Sizing from actual fixture demand, not from whatever tank came out
-
Removal and responsible disposal of the old heater
-
New water connections and valves; we do not reuse failed flex lines as a default
-
Gas connection and venting check on gas tanks, including proper draft and clearances
-
Electrical connection on electric tanks
-
Seismic strapping
-
Expansion tank evaluation on closed systems
-
Relief valve and discharge piping installed as a safety device, not an afterthought
-
Drain pan and drain where the location requires them
-
Start-up, temperature setting and leak check
Bradford White and other quality residential tanks are common on our installs. The brand matters less than matching capacity, fuel type and recovery to the house, then installing the tank the way the manufacturer wrote it up.
Details that get skipped on a cheap replacement
Reusing a crushed flex connector. Leaving a waterlogged expansion tank. Ignoring high house pressure. Setting the thermostat at a scalding temperature because that is how the last one was. Skipping straps. Venting a replacement into a pipe that already had problems. Those are the reasons a one-year-old tank fails like a twelve-year-old tank.
If water pressure is high, we will tell you before the new heater is a victim of it. That work sits with our preventative plumbing services and is part of treating the house, not just the appliance.
Permits and scheduling
Many tank-for-tank replacements in San Diego County can be scheduled promptly when the location and utilities are straightforward. If a permit is required in that city, we plan for it. Same-day is possible on some failures; it is not a promise we make before we know the model, the gas situation and whether the old tank left surprises behind the platform.
Frequently asked questions
What size tank do I need?
Capacity is only part of the answer. Fuel type, recovery rate and how many showers can run at once matter more than picking the same gallon number that was there before. A 50-gallon tank in a two-bath cottage and a 50-gallon tank in a four-bath Carlsbad house are not the same job.
Gas or electric?
We replace with the fuel the home already supports unless there is a reason to change. Switching fuel types is a different project.
Can you install a tank in a garage, closet or exterior closet?
Yes, when the location meets clearance, combustion-air, drainage and code requirements. Some interior closets that held an old tank are no longer acceptable for a new one without changes.
