Tankless Water Heater Installation

CF Plumbing installs and replaces high-efficiency tankless and on-demand water heaters throughout La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe, with additional service in select areas of San Diego and Orange Counties.

A tankless water heater is not a swap of one box for another. Performance depends on sizing for simultaneous fixtures, a gas supply that can actually feed the burner, correct venting, clean water connections, isolation valves for future service, and — in many North County homes — a recirculation strategy so distant bathrooms do not wait. Every system we install is configured, tested and explained so you know what was done and how to live with it.

When a tankless installation is the right project

  • The existing tank is at the end of its life and the home wants continuous hot water with a smaller footprint

  • A previous tankless unit was undersized, poorly vented or never maintained

  • A remodel added showers, a soaking tub or a guest suite and the old heater cannot keep up

  • The homeowner wants higher efficiency and is willing to maintain the unit

  • Space in a garage, closet or exterior wall can be used more intelligently than a tall storage tank allows

A tank still makes sense in some homes. We say so when it does. The goal is reliable hot water, not a product pitch. Our article Tank vs Tankless Water Heater: Which Fits Your North County San Diego Home? walks through that decision.

What a correct tankless installation includes

We start with the home, not the brochure. That means counting the fixtures that can run at the same time, looking at incoming water temperature, confirming gas meter and pipe capacity, planning venting that meets the manufacturer and code, and deciding whether a dedicated return line, a crossover valve or the unit’s built-in recirculation is the honest way to get hot water to far bathrooms.

A complete installation typically includes:

  • Load calculation and model selection, including Navien and other major brands when they fit the job

  • Safe removal and disposal of the existing tank or tankless unit

  • Gas-line evaluation and upgrade when the new BTU load requires it

  • Category-appropriate venting and combustion-air provisions

  • Water connections with isolation valves and hose bibbs for future descaling

  • Condensate handling on condensing units

  • Seismic considerations, mounting and clearances

  • Recirculation piping, pump and controls when the floor plan needs them

  • Start-up, combustion check, temperature set points and a walkthrough of filters and service intervals

  • Permit coordination where the city requires it

North County details that change the install

Hard water is not optional here. Isolation valves and service ports are not extras; they are how the unit gets descaled later without cutting pipe. Homes in Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch and larger Carlsbad properties often need more than a compact single unit if several showers can run at once. Coastal houses in La Jolla, Del Mar and Encinitas frequently have long runs to a far master bath — that is a recirculation conversation at the same time as the heater conversation, not a year later when someone is tired of waiting.

Gas supply is the item most often skipped by a low bid. A tankless burner can demand far more BTUs than the tank it replaces. If the pipe and meter cannot deliver that fuel, the unit will light, stumble and throw codes. We check this before the heater is ordered, not after it is hanging on the wall.

What we explain before we leave

You should know the set temperature, how to read a basic error code, where the inlet screen is, how often descaling is realistic in this water, and what the recirculation schedule is doing. A system nobody understands gets neglected, and neglected tankless equipment fails early.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace my tank with a tankless unit in the same spot?

Sometimes. The location must allow proper venting, clearances, gas supply and service access. Many garage tank locations work. Tight interior closets often do not, or they require a different model and vent path.

Do I need a recirculation pump with a new tankless heater?

If it takes a long time for hot water to reach a distant shower, yes — or at least a planned solution. Tankless equipment does not magically shorten the pipe between the heater and the fixture. See our Hot Water Recirculation page.

How long does installation take?

A straightforward like-for-like tankless replacement can be a single workday. A tank-to-tankless conversion with gas and venting changes takes longer and is scheduled as a planned project, not a squeeze-in.

Will you pull the permit?

Where the city requires a permit for water heater replacement or a fuel-gas change, we handle the process as part of a professional installation. Requirements vary by jurisdiction in San Diego County.
