When the old heater has to go
If your water heater is aging, leaking, or can't keep up, the decision usually comes down to one question: replace it with another tank, or switch to tankless?
CF Plumbing installs, diagnoses, repairs, and replaces both. We work on systems across brands — including Navien and other quality tankless units, as well as traditional tank heaters such as Bradford White — and we see a lot of homes where the "heater problem" is really a sizing, venting, gas-supply, recirculation, or water-quality problem.

In many of the homes we serve in La Jolla, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Carlsbad, and Rancho Santa Fe — especially when replacing a large storage tank around the 75-gallon range — we often prefer tankless. Not as a trend. As the stronger long-term system when it can be installed and maintained correctly.
How tank and tankless actually differ
Tank water heaters store a set volume of hot water and keep reheating it. When the tank runs out, you wait. They're familiar, and a like-for-like replacement is often the simpler day-one path when the existing location, connections, and venting already work.
Tankless (on-demand) water heaters heat water as it flows through the unit. Sized correctly for peak demand, they can deliver continuous hot water for the fixtures they were designed to support, without a large storage tank taking closet or garage space.
They are not the same product in a different shape. The right choice depends on how your household uses hot water — and on whether the home can support the system you want.
Why we often prefer tankless
When a large tank is already due for replacement, a properly planned tankless install is frequently a closer investment than homeowners expect — and you're buying a different platform:

Less energy spent keeping a full tank hot all day
Built-in recirculation options on many modern systems
Better control: scheduling, operating modes, and diagnostics a basic tank doesn't offer
Preferring tankless means we ask whether tankless can be done right for this house — correct sizing, gas supply, venting, condensate where required, and recirculation — not whether we can hang the newest box on the wall. If a clean conversion is a poor fit, or a quality tank replacement is the better call right now, we say so.

Quicker hot water: both can — not the same way
This is one of the biggest misunderstandings we hear in the field.
Tankless with built-in recirculation. Many tankless systems we install can recirculate using a built-in pump and controls. Distant fixtures get hot water faster, and recirculation can often be scheduled so you're not wasting gas running it all day. It's part of the heater's design — efficient and programmable.
Tank with an external recirculation pump. A storage tank can also shorten wait times, but you typically add an external pump and controls. That adds equipment and labor. External pumps also tend to be a shorter-lived add-on than recirculation designed into a modern tankless unit, which can mean earlier replacement of that pump.
So both can deliver faster hot water. They are not like-for-like. One builds recirculation into a more controllable system. The other often bolts it on.

Efficiency and control
A tank keeps a volume of water hot whether anyone is home or not. That's standby loss.
Tankless heats on demand. Paired with programmable recirculation, many households use less gas over time while still getting convenient hot water. Modern tankless controls also make it easier to adjust how the system behaves as schedules change, and clearer diagnostics help when something isn't right.

Maintenance: anode rods vs descaling
Tank heaters need periodic flushing and attention to the anode rod — the sacrificial part that helps protect the tank from corrosion. Skip that care, and tanks fail earlier. Anode service is a normal part of owning a tank for the long haul.
Tankless heaters in our area need descaling and related service because mineral content is hard on heat exchangers. The visit is typically a descaling service, not pulling and replacing an anode rod inside a storage tank. For many homeowners, that ongoing service is simpler across the life of the equipment.
Neither system is zero maintenance. The question is what you're maintaining — and whether that fits a longer-warranty tankless investment or a tank you're expecting to replace sooner.
Water quality belongs in the same conversation
Mineral scale shortens heater life, hurts efficiency, and shows up as the performance problems and error codes we diagnose in the field. That applies to tank and tankless.
When you're choosing a heater especially tankless you want to last — we often discuss whole-house water filtration as part of protecting plumbing, fixtures, water heaters, and appliances. Whole-house filtration is different from under-sink reverse osmosis for drinking and cooking, and different again from salt-based softening. What actually drives cost
Installed cost depends on whether this is a simple swap or a conversion, gas capacity, venting path, condensate, electrical needs, location, recirculation goals, and permits. Cheap quotes that ignore those details are how tankless jobs go wrong.
What we can say without a fake price list: a like-for-like tank replacement is often the simpler day-one path. A tankless conversion can involve more infrastructure. When you're replacing a large tank, the gap between a proper tank job and a proper tankless job is frequently narrower than people assume — especially once you include an external recirculation pump on a tank, shorter equipment life, and earlier replacement.
When a tank is still the right recommendation
We still recommend a quality tank when you need the most straightforward replacement with minimal construction impact, peak demand and layout are well served by a properly sized tank, the home's gas or venting makes a clean tankless conversion a poor fit right now, or you're bridging to a later remodel and only need reliable hot water in the meantime.
