We recently received a phone call that started with a simple question:

“Do you work on steam showers?”

Yes, we do.

“Great. I just need mine hooked up.”

There are certain phrases that, after decades in the plumbing industry, immediately make you ask a few more questions.

“I just need you to…” is one of them.

The homeowner had recently completed a bathroom remodel. The steam generator was there. The rough plumbing had already been completed. The walls were closed.

According to the homeowner, everything was essentially finished. He just needed someone to connect the steam generator, test the system and get the shower running.

Sounds simple.

It wasn't.

Who Installed the Steam Shower?

Our first question was who performed the original steam shower installation and why that person wasn't completing the final connections and startup.

The homeowner explained that an “independent installer” had completed the rough work but was no longer returning his calls.

That's when a seemingly simple steam generator hookup becomes something entirely different.

When a licensed plumbing contractor steps into a project after someone else has completed the rough installation—especially after the walls have been closed—we aren't simply being asked to connect a piece of equipment.

We're being asked to trust work we cannot see.

With a specialty system like a steam shower, that's a significant amount of trust.

A Steam Generator Is Part of a System

A residential steam generator isn't simply an appliance that gets plugged in and turned on.

It's one component of an entire steam shower system.

Depending on the manufacturer and installation, that system can involve water supply piping, steam piping, drainage, automatic flushing components, drain protection, controls, electrical requirements, generator location, service accessibility and other manufacturer-specific installation requirements.

Materials matter.

Routing matters.

Pitch matters.

Drainage matters.

Clearances matter.

Accessibility matters.

After years of installing and servicing steam systems, you learn that seemingly small details can determine whether a system operates properly—or becomes a very expensive problem later.

Once the Walls Close, We Lose the Ability to Verify the Rough Installation

This is one of the most important things homeowners should understand when installing a steam shower or other specialty plumbing system.

Before the walls close, we can see the work.

We can see how piping was routed. We can see materials. We can verify connections. We can identify missing components. We can compare the installation with manufacturer requirements. And if something needs to be corrected, we can address it while everything is still accessible.

Once drywall, tile, cabinetry and other finishes cover the rough plumbing, much of that information disappears.

A beautiful finished bathroom tells us very little about what's happening six inches behind the wall.

And no experienced plumbing contractor should simply assume everything hidden behind those finishes was installed correctly.

“Just Turn It On and See What Happens” Isn't How We Work

Could the original installation be perfect?

Absolutely.

But we can't safely assume that it is.

If something was installed incorrectly, the consequence may be considerably more serious than a steam shower that doesn't produce steam.

A plumbing failure can cause substantial water damage. An installation problem can damage an expensive steam generator. Incorrect components or connections can create operational and safety concerns. And discovering those problems after a completed bathroom has been tiled and finished can make correcting them significantly more difficult.

And here's one homeowners sometimes overlook:

Ask to see their work.

Don't be afraid to ask a plumber or contractor for photographs of previous installations.

Most experienced tradespeople are proud of good work. We certainly are.

If a company regularly installs steam showers, smart toilets or complicated specialty fixtures, there should be evidence of that experience.

A website can say almost anything.

Actual completed projects tell a much better story.

The Best Time for a Second Opinion Is Before the Walls Close

If something about a specialty installation doesn't feel right, don't wait until the bathroom is finished to ask questions.

Stop while the rough plumbing is still visible.

Get a second opinion.

Have someone experienced with that particular type of system look at the installation before drywall, tile or cabinetry covers it.

Correcting an issue while everything is accessible can be relatively straightforward.

Finding that same issue after an expensive bathroom remodel is complete can turn it into an entirely different project.

So What Does It Cost to “Just Hook Up” a Steam Generator?

Back to our phone call.

The homeowner had already found another steam shower specialist who serviced his area and was willing to come out for approximately $1,000.

He thought that sounded expensive.

Our reaction was different.

The first question that came to mind was:

What is that contractor going to find when he gets there?

Because there isn't a universal price for finishing someone else's steam shower installation.

Until someone experienced evaluates the system, nobody knows whether they're making a few final connections or diagnosing and correcting an installation they didn't perform.

Sometimes everything has been installed beautifully and the final commissioning is straightforward.

Other times there are missing components, incorrect materials, piping issues, accessibility problems or other corrections that need to be made before the system should be operated.

You're not necessarily paying a steam shower specialist for the few minutes it takes to make a connection.

You're paying for the experience required to know whether that connection should be made in the first place.
