The farther the fixture is from the water heater, the more cooled water may be sitting inside the piping—and the longer you may have to wait.

What Is a Hot Water Recirculation System?
A hot water recirculation system, also called a hot water recirculating system, circulation pump or recirc pump, is designed to keep heated water closer to the fixtures where you use it.
Without recirculation, you turn on a faucet or shower and wait while hot water travels from the water heater through the piping to the fixture.
With recirculation, water can be circulated through the plumbing system so there is less cooled water sitting between the water heater and the fixture when hot water is needed.
A properly configured hot water recirculation system can provide:
Faster hot water at faucets
Faster hot water at showers
Less time waiting for hot water
Less potable water running down the drain
Improved convenience in bathrooms and kitchens far from the water heater
But not every recirculation system works the same way.
The home's existing plumbing configuration determines which options are available.
What Is a Dedicated Hot Water Recirculation Line?
The preferred plumbing configuration is generally a dedicated hot water recirculation line, sometimes called a dedicated hot-water return line.
A dedicated return provides a separate path for water to circulate back toward the water heater instead of using the home's cold-water piping as the return path.
If your home was originally constructed with a dedicated recirculation line, we generally want to take advantage of it.
However, many existing homes throughout San Diego County and Orange County weren't originally plumbed with a dedicated hot-water return.
That doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck waiting for hot water.
Yes.
In many homes, hot water recirculation can be added to an existing tank water heater.
This can be a practical solution for homeowners who are happy with their current water heater but frustrated because hot water takes too long to reach a distant shower, bathroom or kitchen faucet.
An external hot water recirculation pump can often be installed at the water heater.
If the home doesn't have a dedicated return line, a crossover tee or check tee may be installed at an appropriate fixture, often at or near the farthest fixture from the water heater.
This allows us to create a retrofit recirculation system using existing plumbing instead of installing an entirely new dedicated return pipe through finished walls and ceilings.
What Is a Crossover Tee or Check Tee for Hot Water Recirculation?
A crossover tee or check tee can provide a return path for a hot water recirculation system when a home doesn't have a dedicated hot-water return line.
We typically evaluate the plumbing layout and the fixtures located farthest from the water heater to determine the appropriate crossover location.
The system can then use the home's existing cold-water piping as part of the return path for recirculation.
Think of it as creating a retrofit—or “faux”—recirculation return using plumbing that's already inside the home.
For many existing houses, this can be considerably more practical than opening walls, ceilings and other finished areas to install a new dedicated return line.
Is a Crossover Recirculation System as Good as a Dedicated Return Line?
Not exactly.
A properly installed crossover recirculation system can significantly improve hot-water delivery, but it isn't identical to a true dedicated recirculation return.
Because the system uses existing cold-water piping as part of the return path, there are limitations.
Depending on the plumbing configuration and how the system is controlled, you may temporarily notice warmer water on the cold side at the crossover fixture.
That's why we explain that an external recirculation pump with a crossover tee is a retrofit solution.
It may not provide the same performance or control options as a properly designed dedicated recirculation system, but in many existing homes it can be a substantial improvement over waiting—and wasting water—every time someone wants to take a shower or use a faucet.
Can I Add Hot Water Recirculation Without Opening My Walls?
Often, yes.
That's one of the biggest advantages of a crossover-style hot water recirculation system.
If installing a new dedicated return line isn't practical, we can evaluate whether an external recirculation pump and crossover/check tee can utilize the home's existing plumbing.
This may allow homeowners to get hot water to distant fixtures faster without opening finished walls throughout the house.
Every home is different, however.
Pipe layout, water-heater location, fixture locations, plumbing branches and the distance to the farthest fixtures all affect how well a retrofit recirculation system will perform.
This is why we evaluate the plumbing before recommending a specific solution rather than simply installing a pump and hoping for the best.
Why Is My Hot Water Recirculation Pump Not Working?
If you already have a recirculation system but suddenly find yourself waiting longer for hot water, don't automatically assume you need a new water heater.
The problem may actually be with the hot water recirculation system.

One misconception we frequently hear is:
Not necessarily.
Tankless means the water is heated on demand rather than stored inside a large tank. Once heated, that hot water still has to travel through the piping between the tankless water heater and the faucet or shower.
If your primary bathroom is a long distance from the tankless water heater, you can still wait for hot water without an appropriately designed and configured recirculation system.
That's why we look at the water heater and the home's hot-water delivery system together.
Why We Like Navien Tankless Water Heaters With Built-In Recirculation
When an existing water heater is approaching replacement age, we often discuss whether upgrading to a Navien tankless water heater with built-in recirculation capability makes sense for the home.
Rather than adapting a separate external pump to an existing tank water heater, compatible Navien models incorporate recirculation capability into the water-heating system.
This gives us additional options for configuring hot-water circulation based on the home's plumbing.
When paired with the appropriate plumbing configuration—whether an existing dedicated return line or a compatible retrofit configuration—integrated recirculation can provide an efficient and convenient approach to hot-water delivery.
