How to Troubleshoot Low Water Pressure in Your Home

Low water pressure can make even simple household tasks frustrating. A shower may feel weak, a kitchen faucet may take forever to fill a pot, or the water pressure throughout the house may suddenly drop whenever more than one fixture is being used.

The cause may be as simple as a clogged faucet aerator, but it can also indicate a failing pressure-reducing valve, partially closed shutoff valve, hidden water leak, restricted water line, water-heater problem or aging plumbing system.

Is the Low Water Pressure at One Fixture or Throughout the House?

The first step is determining how widespread the problem is.

Test several fixtures throughout your home, including:

Run both the hot and cold water at each location. This simple test can help narrow the problem down considerably.

If only one faucet or shower has low pressure, the restriction is probably located at that fixture. If every fixture is affected, the problem may involve the home’s main water supply, pressure-reducing valve, shutoff valve, filtration system or piping.


What Causes Low Water Pressure at One Faucet?

When only one faucet has poor flow, the problem is often a clogged aerator, damaged cartridge, blocked supply line or partially closed angle stop.

Check the Faucet Aerator

The aerator is the small screen located at the end of many faucet spouts. Sand, sediment and mineral scale can accumulate inside it and restrict water flow.

Remove the aerator and inspect it for buildup. You can rinse away loose debris or soak the aerator in a vinegar solution to help dissolve mineral deposits. Severely clogged or damaged aerators may need to be replaced.

Before reinstalling it, briefly run the faucet without the aerator. If the water flow returns to normal, the aerator was probably the source of the restriction.

If the flow remains weak, the problem may be inside the faucet, supply line or shutoff valve.

A Faucet Cartridge Can Also Restrict Water Flow

Not every low-flow faucet problem is caused by the aerator. Sediment and hard-water scale can become trapped inside the faucet cartridge or internal waterways.

This is especially important with Waterworks, Rohl, Newport Brass, Dornbracht, Graff, California Faucets, Brizo, Kohler, Grohe, Hansgrohe and other premium plumbing fixtures. These fixtures often use manufacturer-specific cartridges, flow restrictors and internal components that should be correctly identified before they are removed or replaced.

Improper disassembly can damage expensive trim or make the original problem worse.

Why Does Only One Shower Have Low Water Pressure?

Low pressure at a single shower may be caused by:

  • Mineral buildup inside the showerhead

  • A clogged showerhead flow restrictor

  • Debris inside the shower cartridge

  • A failing pressure-balance cartridge

  • A restricted thermostatic valve

  • A partially closed volume control

  • A problem with the shower diverter

  • A kinked or restricted handheld-shower hose

Large luxury shower systems may contain several volume controls, diverters, body sprays, rain heads and thermostatic components. Diagnosing these systems requires more than simply replacing a standard shower cartridge.

If pressure has declined throughout an entire multi-outlet shower system, the restriction may be located inside the valve, upstream piping or water-heating system.


What If the Hot Water Pressure Is Low but the Cold Water Is Normal?

If cold-water pressure is strong but hot-water flow is weak throughout the house, the problem is usually located somewhere within the hot-water system.

Possible causes include:

  • A partially closed water-heater shutoff valve

  • A failing or internally restricted shutoff valve

  • Sediment or scale at the water-heater connections

  • A restricted flex connector

  • A clogged tankless water-heater inlet filter

  • Scale accumulation inside a tankless heat exchanger

  • Restrictions within the home’s hot-water piping

  • A recirculation-system problem

  • A failing mixing valve

Verify that the water-heater shutoff valve is completely open, but do not disassemble water-heater connections or safety components unless you are qualified to do so.

Water heaters involve pressurized water, electricity, gas and high temperatures. When the cause is not obvious, the system should be evaluated by a licensed plumber.


Can a Tankless Water Heater Cause Low Hot-Water Pressure?

A tankless water heater can deliver excellent hot-water performance when it is properly sized, installed and maintained. However, restricted inlet screens, hard-water scale, undersized gas supply, incorrect piping and poor installation can all affect its performance.

A tankless water heater must also be sized for the number of fixtures being used simultaneously. When the home’s hot-water demand exceeds the unit’s available flow rate, occupants may experience reduced flow or inconsistent temperatures.

Tankless problems are frequently blamed on the appliance when the actual issue is improper installation, incorrect sizing or insufficient maintenance.

Regular tankless water-heater maintenance and descaling can help remove scale that restricts the heat exchanger and reduces efficiency.


What Causes Low Water Pressure Throughout the House?

When both hot and cold water are weak at multiple fixtures, the problem is usually not a single faucet. Common whole-house causes include:

  • A failing pressure-reducing valve

  • A partially closed main water shutoff

  • A hidden plumbing leak

  • A clogged or undersized water filter

  • An old filter cartridge that needs replacement

  • Corroded galvanized water lines

  • Mineral buildup inside older piping

  • An undersized main water service

  • A problem with the municipal water supply

  • Excessive demand when several fixtures operate simultaneously

A pressure problem should be properly tested before parts are replaced. Flow and pressure are related, but they are not the same thing. A home can show acceptable static pressure when nothing is running and still experience poor flow when multiple fixtures are turned on.


Could the Pressure-Reducing Valve Be Failing?

Many homes have a pressure-reducing valve, commonly called a PRV, installed near the point where the main water line enters the property. It is often bell-shaped and is designed to reduce high municipal water pressure to a safer level for the home’s plumbing system.

A failing PRV may cause:

  • Low pressure throughout the house

  • Pressure that rises and falls unexpectedly

  • Strong pressure at first followed by weak flow

  • Noise or vibration in the pipes

  • Different pressure from one day to the next

  • Excessively high pressure that damages fixtures and appliances

Although some PRVs have an adjustment screw, adjusting the valve does not repair worn or damaged internal components. Turning the adjustment without measuring the actual pressure can also create excessive pressure and place unnecessary stress on faucets, toilets, water heaters, supply lines and appliances.

A plumber can test both static and flowing water pressure to determine whether the PRV needs adjustment or replacement.


Check the Main Water Shutoff Valve

A partially closed main shutoff valve can restrict the amount of water entering the house.

This sometimes occurs after plumbing work, water-heater replacement, leak repair or emergency service. Older gate valves can also break internally and remain partially closed even when the handle appears to be fully open.

Do not force an old or corroded shutoff valve. If it breaks, the home may lose water service or develop a significant leak. A questionable main valve should be inspected and, when necessary, replaced with a dependable full-port ball valve.


Can a Whole-House Water Filter Reduce Water Pressure?

Yes. A whole-house filtration system can restrict water flow if it is incorrectly sized, improperly installed or overdue for service.

Potential filtration-related causes include:

  • Clogged sediment filters

  • Exhausted or compacted filter media

  • Filter cartridges with insufficient flow capacity

  • Undersized filter housings

  • Partially closed bypass valves

  • Incorrect system configuration

  • Pressure loss across multiple filtration stages

If the pressure improves when the filtration system is placed into bypass, the filter or its installation may be contributing to the problem.

A properly designed whole-house water-filtration system should account for the home’s pipe size, number of bathrooms, expected simultaneous demand and required service flow—not simply the number of people living in the house.


Could a Hidden Water Leak Cause Low Pressure?

A substantial leak can reduce available water pressure and increase the water bill. However, many small fixture leaks waste water without causing a noticeable pressure change throughout the home.

Signs of a possible hidden leak include:

  • An unexplained increase in the water bill

  • A water meter that moves when everything is turned off

  • Damp flooring or cabinetry

  • Water stains on walls or ceilings

  • Mold or musty odors

  • Warm areas on the floor

  • Wet soil near the main water line

  • The sound of running water when no fixtures are operating

How to Perform a Basic Water-Meter Test

Turn off faucets, irrigation, appliances, water-treatment equipment and anything else that uses water. Make sure no toilets are running.

Record the meter reading or photograph it. Avoid using water for a period of time and then check the meter again. If the reading changes, water is passing through the meter and further investigation may be necessary.

Automatic pool fillers, irrigation valves, reverse-osmosis systems and water softeners can use water without being immediately obvious, so these should also be considered before concluding that there is a plumbing leak.


Can a Running Toilet Lower Water Pressure?

A running toilet wastes a surprising amount of water and can contribute to pressure or flow problems, especially when combined with other fixtures. More commonly, it causes an unexpectedly high water bill.

To test a standard tank-style toilet:

  1. Remove the tank lid.

  2. Add several drops of food coloring to the tank.

  3. Do not flush the toilet for approximately 30 to 60 minutes.

  4. Check the bowl for colored water.

If color appears in the bowl, water is leaking from the tank. The flapper, flush valve, fill valve or another internal component may need repair.

Smart toilets, wall-hung toilets and electronic bidet systems such as TOTO NEOREST and TOTO WASHLET systems operate differently and may require specialized diagnosis.


Can Old Pipes Cause Low Water Pressure?

Older galvanized steel water lines can corrode internally over time. Although the pipe may appear acceptable from the outside, the inside diameter can become severely restricted by rust and mineral accumulation.

Common signs of restricted piping include:

  • Weak flow at several fixtures

  • Poor pressure when two fixtures run simultaneously

  • Discolored water

  • Reduced flow that has gradually worsened

  • Better pressure at fixtures located closer to the main supply

  • A home that still contains original galvanized plumbing

Cleaning heavily corroded galvanized piping is rarely a lasting solution. Depending on the condition and layout of the system, replacement with properly sized copper or approved PEX piping may be recommended.

Hard-water scale can also affect faucet cartridges, angle stops, shower valves, water heaters and other plumbing components. Properly selected water filtration and scale-control equipment can help protect the plumbing system, but it cannot restore pipes that are already severely corroded or restricted.


Why Does the Water Pressure Drop When Two Fixtures Are Running?

If each fixture works acceptably by itself but the pressure drops dramatically when multiple fixtures are used, the home may have a flow restriction or insufficient supply capacity.

Possible causes include:

  • A failing PRV

  • A partially closed main valve

  • Undersized piping

  • Restricted galvanized water lines

  • A clogged filtration system

  • An undersized water service

  • Excessive demand from a large shower system

  • A restriction at the water meter or utility connection

This type of problem requires pressure and flow testing under demand. Checking the pressure only while every fixture is turned off may not reveal the restriction.


Ask Your Neighbors About Their Water Pressure

If the water pressure dropped suddenly, ask nearby neighbors whether they are experiencing the same problem.

When several homes are affected, the cause may be municipal maintenance, a water-main problem or temporary demand on the public system. Contact the local water district before making changes to your home’s plumbing.

If neighboring homes have normal pressure, the problem is more likely located on your property.


When Should You Call a Plumber for Low Water Pressure?

Call a licensed plumber when:

  • Every fixture has low pressure

  • Only the hot-water pressure is low

  • The pressure changes unpredictably

  • The PRV may be failing

  • You suspect a hidden leak

  • Galvanized or aging water lines may be restricted

  • A filtration system is reducing flow

  • A tankless water heater is not performing correctly

  • A luxury faucet or shower system requires specialized parts

  • Pressure drops whenever multiple fixtures are used

  • The main shutoff valve is corroded or difficult to operate

Accurate diagnosis matters. Replacing faucet cartridges will not correct a failing PRV, and adjusting the PRV will not solve restricted piping. The pressure should be tested under real operating conditions so the underlying problem can be identified before repairs are recommended.
